Claiming as a CIS subcontractor

How CIS subcontractors claim a tax rebate with TaxPro — your Home tasks, what happens after you submit, and how long it takes.

Written by Megan

As a CIS subcontractor, tax is deducted from your payments at source — which means you are often owed a refund. TaxPro handles your claim end to end. Here is what you need to do.

Your Home tasks

Once your account is set up, your Home screen shows a short checklist. Complete each task in the app:

  1. Addresses — your home address and your main workplace. Use the home address HMRC holds for you, or your claim can be delayed.

  2. Claim agreement — sign once so TaxPro can act for you with HMRC.

  3. CIS statements — upload your CIS deduction statements. These show the tax already deducted from your payments and are the foundation of your rebate calculation.

  4. About your work — tell us about your tools, protective clothing, professional fees and any other work-related expenses.

  5. Additional info — a few questions about pensions, Gift Aid, Marriage Allowance, student loan and other income. A 'No' is fine for each one you do not have.

  6. Check and submit — review your details, confirm five short statements about your work, then tap Submit for review. Nothing goes to HMRC at this point — our accountant checks everything first.

CIS claims do not include a Connect HMRC step or a travel task. Your CIS statements provide the tax records we need.

After you submit

  • Our accountant reviews your claim. Most reviews finish within 5 working days.

  • First-time claimants only: TaxPro registers you for Self Assessment (SA1) and sends your agent authorisation (64-8) to HMRC by post on your behalf. This runs in the background and takes 4 to 6 weeks. There is nothing for you to do — if HMRC write to you during this time, send us a photo in chat.

  • We send you a personal estimate showing your take-home figure. We text you when it is ready. Tap Approve estimate, confirm your identity and add your bank details.

  • We file your return with HMRC within 2 working days of your approval.

  • HMRC processes your return — usually 1 to 3 weeks.

  • Payout: once HMRC pays your refund, we send your money the next working day. It shows in your account within 2 to 3 working days. Your fee is deducted before we send it — no invoices, no surprises.

Fees

  • £220 + VAT per tax year for a standard rebate claim.

  • £99 + VAT per tax year if your return is a nil return (nothing owed back).

Your fee is always deducted from your HMRC refund — TaxPro never charges upfront or takes card payments.

Repeat claimants

If you have claimed with TaxPro before, the HMRC set-up stage is skipped entirely. Your claim moves straight from review to estimate, making the process significantly faster.
