Step 6: Other Expenses — how to complete it

Uniform, tools, professional fees, training and working from home, and what you can claim without receipts.

Written by Kiyarah

Everything you pay for to do your job, that your employer hasn't reimbursed. The average claim here is around £150.

Where to find it

Sign in at app.taxpro.co.uk, open your claim, then open the Other Expenses step.

The web address looks like app.taxpro.co.uk/claims/<your claim>/other-expenses.

What to include

  • Uniform and protective clothing you wash or replace yourself. Branded workwear and PPE count. Ordinary clothes you could wear outside work do not, even if you only wear them for work.

  • Tools and equipment you bought for the job.

  • Professional fees and subscriptions to an approved body, for example a union or a professional register you must be on to work.

  • Training your employer required and didn't pay for.

  • Working from home, where your employer requires you to work from home rather than you choosing to.

  • Phone and internet, the work proportion of it.

Do you need receipts?

For uniform washing there is a flat allowance, so no receipts are needed. For anything you bought, keep the receipt if you have it. Since 2024 HMRC ask for evidence up front on employment expense claims, and a claim with clear evidence moves noticeably faster than one where HMRC has to write and ask.

You can upload receipts in the Documents step.

If your employer paid some of it

Enter the amount they reimbursed. You claim on the part you were left out of pocket for.

What if none of it applies?

That's fine. Leave it empty and move on. Your travel claim may still be worth a lot on its own.
