Step 5: About your work (uniform, tools, fees and more)

The questions about your job: uniform, tools, professional fees, working from home, phone and training, and what you need receipts for.

Written by Megan

This is task 5 of 5 on your Home screen. It covers what you pay for to do your job that your employer has not paid back.

Where to find it

On your Home screen, tap About your work.

What we ask

First, your job title and a line on what you do. It sets which expenses we suggest. Then six questions:

  • Uniform or protective clothing you wash, repair or replace yourself. Branded workwear, scrubs, overalls and safety gear count. Ordinary clothes do not, even if you only wear them for work. HMRC allows a flat rate; if you bought your own, add the cost too.

  • Tools or equipment you buy, repair or replace yourself. A rough yearly figure is fine.

  • Fees to a professional body or trade union, like the NMC, Unison or a trade association. We check it against HMRC's approved list.

  • Working from home, only if your employer required it. HMRC allows £6 a week. Working from home by choice does not count.

  • Your own phone or internet, only the extra cost of work use, and only if your employer does not pay it back.

  • Training your employer required, or that was directly for the job you do now. Not training for a new career.

Do you need receipts?

No receipts are needed to submit. Rough figures are fine. For anything you bought, keep the receipt if you have it, in case HMRC asks. If you want to send one, tap Add documents on your Home screen, or send a photo in chat.

If your employer paid some of it

Tell us on the question. You can only claim the part you paid yourself.

What if none of it applies?

That is fine. Answer No to each question and move on. Your travel may still be worth a lot on its own.

Not sure whether something counts? Describe it to us here and we will tell you either way.
