Bank details: when we ask for them and how to change them

When we ask for the account your refund is paid into, what you need, and how to change it before we file.

Written by Megan

You do not add your bank details at the start of your claim. We ask for them once you approve your estimate, just before we file your return with HMRC.

When we ask

When your estimate is ready, open your claim and tap Approve estimate. We then ask you to confirm it is you (the identity check), and then where to pay your refund. Once your bank details are in, your approval is complete and our accountant files your return within 2 working days.

What you need

  • The name on the account, exactly as your bank has it. For a joint account, your name is enough.

  • The sort code, 6 digits.

  • The account number, 8 digits.

You also choose your bank from the list. Then tap Check and save.

The name check

We check the name against the account with your bank before saving (Confirmation of Payee), so a typo cannot send your refund astray. It is used only to pay your refund, and you are never charged.

  • If your bank says the name is a close match, you can confirm the account is yours and save it.

  • If your bank says the name does not match, check the sort code, account number and name. A refund sent to the wrong account is very hard to get back. You can still save the details if you are sure they are right, and your specialist checks them with you before any payout.

Already gave us an account?

If we already have an account for you, we show it and ask you to confirm it. Tap Use this account, or Change account to give us a different one.

Whose account it can be

It should be an account in your own name. A joint account you are named on is fine. We cannot pay into somebody else's account, because the refund is yours and we have to be able to show it went to you.

Changing it later

After you approve and before we file, you can change your bank details by tapping Change account, or message us. Your old account is replaced once the new one has been checked.

Once your return is filed with HMRC, the account is fixed in the app. Message us and we will sort it with you. If your claim has already been paid, the money has gone to the account that was on file at the time.

When you will be paid

HMRC pays the refund to us as your nominee. We take our fee (37.5% of the refund plus VAT) and pay the rest to this account the next working day. It shows in your account within 1 to 3 working days.
