This step tells us who you worked for and when. It is the step most people get stuck on, so here is exactly how it works.
Where to find it
Sign in at app.taxpro.co.uk, open your claim, then open the Employment History step.
The web address looks like app.taxpro.co.uk/claims/<your claim>/employment-income.
The quick way: import from HMRC
Choose the option to connect to HMRC and import your employment history. It pulls every job HMRC has on record for the years you're claiming, which saves about ten minutes and means you don't have to dig out old payslips or P60s.
You'll be sent to a GOV.UK sign-in page, you approve the request, and you're returned to your claim with the jobs filled in.
If the import brings back a job you don't recognise, or misses one, you can edit or add jobs by hand afterwards.
Adding a job by hand
Use the option to add an employment and enter the employer name and the dates you worked there. Do this for each job in the years you're claiming. If you had two jobs at once, add both.
Rough dates are fine if you can't remember exactly. We can check them against HMRC's record later.
If the import won't finish
You're sent to an Agent Services page instead of the sign-in page. That is a known fault at our end, not something you've done wrong. Tell us and we'll add your employment history for you rather than leaving you stuck.
HMRC won't let you sign in. You need a personal Government Gateway account, not a business or agent one. If you've never set one up, you can create one at gov.uk/personal-tax-account.
It returns with nothing. Try once more, then add the jobs by hand. It doesn't hold your claim up.
How you know it's done
The step shows as complete once at least one employment is saved covering the years you're claiming.
