Step 1: Addresses — how to complete it

Where to add your home and work address, and why the home address must match HMRC's records exactly.

Written by Kiyarah

This is usually the first step on your claim checklist, and it matters more than it looks. HMRC check the home address on your claim against the address they already hold for you.

Where to find it

Sign in at app.taxpro.co.uk, open your claim, then open the Addresses step.

The web address looks like app.taxpro.co.uk/claims/<your claim>/addresses.

What to enter

  • Home address — where you live now, and where HMRC send your post.

  • Work address — the place you travel to for work. If you work at several sites, use your main one, and you can add the individual journeys later in Travel & Mileage.

Make sure your home address matches HMRC

This is the single most common reason a claim gets held up. If you have moved recently and HMRC still hold your old address, HMRC will reject the Self Assessment registration and your claim cannot progress until it is fixed.

Check what HMRC hold in the HMRC app under Your details, or at gov.uk/personal-tax-account under Menu → Profile and settings.

  • If you can still receive post at the address HMRC hold, use that address here.

  • If you cannot, update your address with HMRC first, then come back and enter the new one here.

How you know it's done

The step shows as complete on your checklist once both addresses are saved. If it still shows as outstanding, one of the two is missing or the postcode has not been accepted.

Stuck, or not sure which address to use? Message us here with the address HMRC hold and we'll sort it with you.
