HMRC says your details don't match — how to fix it

If HMRC rejected your Self Assessment registration, it is nearly always the address. Here is the 30-second check and the fix.

If you've had an email or letter from HMRC saying something like "We are unable to process your application because the details provided do not match our records", don't worry. It is a common, quick fix, and it does not mean anything is wrong with your claim.

It is nearly always the address

HMRC compare the address on the registration against the address they already hold for you. If you've moved, or your address is written slightly differently, the two won't match and HMRC reject the registration automatically.

In practice this is almost never your name, date of birth or National Insurance number. Check the address first.

Step 1 — check the address HMRC holds for you

Either:

Note down the address exactly as HMRC shows it, including the postcode. If your main address and postal address are shown separately, they should match each other too, or letters can go astray.

Step 2 — make the two match

If you can still receive post at the address HMRC holds: the quickest fix is to change the address on your TaxPro application to match HMRC exactly. Send us the correct address here in the chat and we'll update it for you, or change it yourself at app.taxpro.co.uk.

If that address is no longer yours, or you can't receive post there: update your address with HMRC first, in the HMRC app or your Personal Tax Account. Then tell us, so we can match your application to your new address. This order matters, because HMRC will post your UTR letter to whichever address they hold.

Step 3 — tell us, and we'll re-submit

As soon as the two addresses match, message us here. We re-submit your Self Assessment registration straight away, and HMRC then post your UTR (a 10-digit number), usually within 2 to 3 weeks.

You don't need to do anything with HMRC yourself beyond checking the address. We handle the re-submission.

What if it wasn't the address?

If HMRC's message names something else, such as your National Insurance number or date of birth, check that the details on your TaxPro account match the HMRC app exactly, including middle names and the format of your date of birth. Send us a photo of the HMRC message and we'll tell you exactly which field to change.
