Why was my claim unsuccessful — and can I claim again?

The honest reasons a claim ends unsuccessfully, what each means, and when it is worth trying again.

Not every claim ends in a refund, and we would rather be straight with you about why. These are the usual reasons a claim shows as unsuccessful. 🤝

The refund would be too small

Sometimes, once we run the real numbers, the refund would be so small that after any fee you would receive little or nothing — so we close the claim rather than waste your time. This is about this year's numbers, not about you: next tax year, with different expenses or circumstances, it can easily be worth claiming again.

The expenses do not qualify

HMRC's rules are strict: ordinary commuting, expenses your employer reimbursed, and everyday clothing all fall outside them. If your situation changes — a new role with travel between sites, unreimbursed kit, professional fees — you may well qualify in future.

We could not reach you

Claims need your input at key moments (signing, HMRC connection, entering codes). If a claim went quiet, it may have been closed as unresponsive — but nothing stops you picking it back up. Message us here and we can usually reopen or restart it.

Income or employment type

Very low income years (below the tax-free personal allowance) mean there is no tax to refund, and fully self-employed work follows a different route than our PAYE service covers.

Can I claim again?

In most cases, yes — eligibility resets with each tax year, and you can claim for up to 4 past years. From 6 April each year a new year opens up. If you think your closure was a mistake, or your circumstances have changed, message us and a real person will take a look. And if claiming is not right for you, you can still earn through our referral programme.
