My HMRC connection isn't working — how to fix it

Troubleshooting the Connect to HMRC step: failed checks, invalid details, expired links, and when to ask for help.

Written by Kiyarah

The Connect to HMRC step is how we pull your employment and income history so your claim is accurate — no paperwork needed from you. If it will not go through, it is almost always one of these. 🔧

"Invalid NI number or date of birth"

HMRC checks the National Insurance number and date of birth we hold for you against their records. One wrong digit fails the whole check. On the HMRC step you can correct both details directly — check your NI number against a payslip or P60, fix anything that is off, and try again.

The page says it is still waiting

After you approve the connection on HMRC's site, their systems can take a little while to confirm it back to us — we check automatically every few minutes. If it has shown "waiting for authorisation" for more than a day, message us here and we will look at it directly rather than leaving you stuck.

The link expired

HMRC authorisation links are only valid for a limited time. If yours has expired, revisiting the HMRC step in your account generates a fresh one automatically — just click through it again.

An HMRC error with no explanation

Occasionally HMRC's own service has a wobble. Wait an hour, then revisit the HMRC step and try once more. If it fails twice, message us — our team can complete the connection with you another way, so a technical hiccup never has to end your claim.
