You've approved your estimate — what happens next?

The stages between approving your estimate and the money landing: submission, HMRC processing, queries, and payout.

Written by Kiyarah

Nice one — the hard part is done. Here is exactly what happens from here. 💷

1. We submit to HMRC (usually same day)

Once your estimate is approved and your identity check has passed, our accountants file your return with HMRC, normally the same working day. Your claim status changes to Submitted.

2. HMRC processes it (typically 1 to 3 weeks)

HMRC reviews the return and calculates your refund. Most are processed in one to three weeks, though HMRC can take longer in busy periods (especially January and around the new tax year in April).

3. Occasionally: an HMRC query

Sometimes HMRC asks a question or double-checks something before paying. If that happens your status shows HMRC Query — it is routine, we handle it for you, and it usually just adds some extra days or weeks. You do not need to do anything unless we contact you.

4. You get paid 🎉

HMRC releases the refund to us as your tax agent. We deduct our fee and transfer your money to the bank account on your claim — normally within 2 to 3 working days of the refund reaching us. You will get an email and a text the moment it is sent.

While you wait

  • No need to chase — your claim page always shows the live status.

  • Make sure your bank details are correct on the Banking step.

  • Know someone else who could claim? You earn rewards for successful referrals — see the referral article for details.
