Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number HMRC posts to you after we register you with them. Your claim is paused until we have it, so adding it takes top priority — and it only takes 30 seconds. ⏱️
Where to find it
On the letter HMRC posts you — the 10-digit number may be labelled UTR, Unique Taxpayer Reference, or "tax reference".
If you already had a Government Gateway account, it is also shown in your HMRC Personal Tax Account.
How to add it
Open the link in our reminder email or text — it takes you straight to the right page. Or:
Log in at app.taxpro.co.uk, open your account details, choose Personal info, then UTR.
Type the 10 digits (no spaces) and save.
That's it — our team is notified automatically and your claim moves to the next step (HMRC's authorisation code letter). ✅
Checks before you save
It must be exactly 10 digits. If it starts with SA, that is your authorisation code, not your UTR — it goes in a different box on your claim page.
If you cannot find your letter, message us here — we can advise, and HMRC can also tell you your UTR on 0300 200 3310 after security checks.
