Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a ten-digit number HMRC issue for Self Assessment. Every TaxPro claim goes through Self Assessment, so we will need yours.
Where to find it if you already have one
The HMRC app. Sign in and open Your details. Your Self Assessment UTR is listed there.
Your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk/personal-tax-account.
Old HMRC letters. It appears on your "Welcome to Self Assessment" letter (SA250), any notice to file a return, statements of account and previous tax returns.
Your accountant, if you have used one before.
It is always exactly 10 digits. It is not your National Insurance number, and it is not the SA code on the authorisation letter, which starts with SA followed by 8 digits.
What if you haven't got one?
That is completely normal, and there is nothing for you to do. If you have only ever been employed and have never filed a Self Assessment return, HMRC will not have issued you one yet.
We register you with HMRC and they post your UTR to your home address, usually within 2 to 3 weeks. Make sure the address on your TaxPro account matches the one HMRC hold for you, or the registration can be rejected.
When it arrives, send it to us
Your claim cannot move until the number reaches us. Add it yourself at app.taxpro.co.uk under your personal information, or just send us the 10 digits here in the chat and we will add it for you.
Not sure whether we already have it on file? Ask us and we will check.
